Ya, They seem like the cost of making them would be a lot less than they sell them for. But has anybody tried making a homemade version?

The most popular for beginners by far are the Atom 80X, and 95X from MBS. At your size, the 95X would be the way to go, and it should last you a couple years.
Ground Industries also has the bomber which is a good size for you, as well as the catalyst.
You can move up a little as well with Core 95 from MBS as well which would be a good choice.
Let me know if you have any specific questions about any of these.
Welcome to the sport!

Another pretty good spot in the GTA is a set of ledges/ drops.  The closest major intersection is eglington and kipling.  It's on Widdicombe road near the apartment buildings. Sorry for no images but if you use Google Maps Street View you can get a pretty good feeling of the spot.

We sell all over Canada, and shipping to Lethbridge via greyhound is usually very cheap and quick.  Generally next day, and about $20.
You can email me if you have any questions about any of the boards or anything else.
